Silibinin, also known as silybin, is the major active constituent of Silymarin, the mixture of flavonoligans extracted from milk thistle (Silybum marianum). It is used in the treatment and prevention of diseases of the liver due to its anti-hepatotoxic properties.
Chemically modified silibinin, silibinin Dihydrogen disuccinate disodium (trade name Legalon SIL), solution for injection, is used in the treatment of severe diseases with hepatotoxic substances, such as when the amanita phalloides poisoning.
