Resveratrol is a polyphenol of stilbenes class present in some fruits such as grapes, blackberries or peanuts. Found in significant quantities in wine where its presence has been invoked to explain the beneficial effects to the health of a moderate consumption of wine.
Function: Excessive production of free radicals in the body can cause extensive damage on macromolecules and cells of this organism. Degradation of lipids by oxidative stress will cause deposits of fat oxidized in vessels of atherosclerotic plaques, will disrupt the functioning of cell membranes and produce carcinogenic derivatives. The radical attacks of the DNA will be source of carcinogenic mutations and those proteins will inhibit enzymes and dérégleront cell proliferation or defence signals.
