Lysergic acid also known as D-lysergic acid, is a precursor to a number of ergoline alkaloids that are produced by certain plants including ergot of rye.
Amides of lysergic acid are generally referred to as the lysergamides and are widespread as much as drugs as hallucinogenic drugs (LSD)
lysergic acid is usually produced by hydrolysis of the lysergamides, but can also synthesize it in the laboratory.
Lysergic acid is a chiral compound with four stereochemical, so two enantiomers. The isomer with the configuration reversed to the carbon atom 8 close to the carboxy group is called isolysergic acid. Inversion at carbon 5 close to the nitrogen Atom leads to L-lysergic acid and L-isolysergic acid, respectively.
Lysergic acid is listed in table I of the Convention against illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances of 1988
