About AISI 1045 Steel
AISI 1045 steel is a high-quality carbon structural steel, corresponding to Japanese standard S45C, German standard C45. It is characterized by higher strength and deformation resistance than ordinary A3 steel. The cold plasticity of this carbon steel is generally better in annealing and normalizing than in Q+T. It has higher strength and better machinability. After proper heat treatment, certain toughness, plasticity and wear resistance can be obtained. This material sourcing is very common and very convenient for purchasing.
Usually, the AISI 1045 steel applications and attention tips are as following:
1) It is suitable for hydrogen welding and argon arc welding, not very suitable for gas welding. Pre-heating is required before welding, and stress relief annealing should be performed after welding.
2) Recommended heat treatment temperature: normalizing 850, quenching 840, tempering 600.
3) It should not be heat treated by carburizing and quenching.
4) AISI 1045 steel is a high-quality carbon structural steel, which is not high in hardness and easy to be machined. It is commonly used in molds for templates, tips, guide posts, etc., but heat treatment is required.
5) It is qualified after quenching and before tempering, and the hardness is greater than HRC55 (up to HRC62). The highest hardness in practice is HRC55 (high frequency quenching HRC58).
